Have you ever heard of emotional quotient (EQ)? To be honest, I haven’t until a friend told me about it. Especially in China, a high EQ is considered more important than a high intelligence quotient (IQ) because communication is rather indirect. In Western countries, people tend to speak their mind directly, whereas in Chinese society, getting the message of what is said often requires a certain level of sensitivity and good listening. Communication is more relationship-oriented. It might therefore happen that you fill your tummy up to your fullest maximum in order not to hurt your hospitable host’s feelings… Or maybe your host is not too gifted with a high EQ and does not get your message that you have enough? So of course, not all Chinese people are gifted with a high EQ only because it is said to be rather important in China. Plus, the younger generation today might be a little more western-oriented.
